A telephone scam in which bogus law enforcement callers attempt to bully citizens out of money for supposed tickets or warrants has hit eastern Utah.

Uintah County Sheriff Vance Norton said a flurry of complaints have come in recently about such calls, and in some cases the scammers have even threatened their targets with raids and arrests by arresting officers.

Let there be no doubt, however, that this is just the latest incarnation of a long-running con seen across the country.

"The Uintah County Sheriff's Office is not a collection agency and under no circumstance will sheriff's office personnel call and request payment over the phone," Norton stated. "Citizens are urged to not give any personal information over the phone from anyone requesting money from them."

Norton is asking that anyone who has received such calls in Uintah County to call dispatchers at 435-738-1100, or the sheriff's office at 435-781-5422.
