Train strikes and kills Utah dump truck driver

A man was killed Tuesday after a train struck the dump truck he was driving across railroad tracks south of Nephi.

David Stubbs, 27, was pronounced dead at the crash scene, along Sheep Lane Drive south of Nephi and west of the Juab County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release.

The train, comprised of three locomotives and three empty cargo cars, was traveling north when it hit Stubbs, who was driving west. Four people on board the train were uninjured, though “visibly shaken.”

Stubbs, who is from Mona, was driving the truck for Taurus Plumbing & Excavating, a Nephi-based company. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The railroad tracks where Stubbs was killed do not have crossing arms or warning lights, according to the release, which adds that “there have been no significant incidents on this crossing for many years.”

Deputies are investigating the collision.
