Police identify teenage cousins killed in New Year’s Eve dirt bike crash in northern Utah

The teenagers killed in a dirt bike crash in Box Elder County on Sunday night were identified on Tuesday as Wyatt Ellertson, 15, and Caden Ellertson, 14.

The boys were cousins. They had been driving dirt bikes on a dirt road between two cornfields in Corinne, according to a news release from the Box Elder Sheriff’s Office. A 16-year-old was riding as a passenger on one of the bikes; investigators don’t know which bike, said Dale F. Ward, the sheriff’s chief deputy.

The boys were driving toward each other, and the bikes collided just before 9 p.m. All three teens were thrown off as the bikes glanced off each other, the release states.

Wyatt Ellertson was declared dead at the scene. A helicopter flew Caden Ellertson to Primary Children’s Hospital, where he died a short time later, according to the release. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital. His condition is not known. All three teenagers are from Box Elder County, according to Ward.

Neither bike had headlights. Both drivers had been wearing helmets, the release states.

Investigators haven’t determined how fast the teens had been driving, but they estimate it was somewhere between 30 and 40 mph.
