Gang members shoot at rivals in South Salt Lake, hit a bystander instead

A bystander was hit when two teenagers allegedly opened fire during an apparent gang confrontation Saturday in South Salt Lake.

The 32-year-old man was hit about 1 p.m. when a 16 and 17-year-old reportedly fired shots at a group of people in the 7-11 parking lot, near 2700 South and State Street, South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said.

The altercation began when a car traveling westbound on 2700 South at State Street stopped for a red light at the intersection near the 7-11 parking lot, where two people were standing, Keller said.

The two began gesturing at the car and the groups reportedly flashed gang signs, Keller said, and then the vehicle pulled into the parking lot. The people inside got out, and the teenagers standing by the intersection reportedly began shooting at them.

Police are investigating if the people in the car also fired shots.

While it appears no one inside the vehicles were hit, a bullet struck a man in the foot as he was getting into his car at the store. He was taken to a local hospital, and has since been treated and released, Keller said.

The car and the alleged shooters fled the convenience store. Police later found the teenagers hiding in a garage and arrested them. They were booked into the Salt Lake County juvenile detention center.

Officers also found a gun in the garage, Keller said.
