In a Utah County shootout with police, an uninvolved motorist is shot on I-15

Authorities closed northbound Interstate 15 in Utah County on Wednesday evening after a shootout car chase that injured a suspect and an uninvolved motorist.

Officers from several agencies were chasing “a guy who would not stop” down the interstate when he reportedly fired at officers near mile marker 260, in the Provo-Orem are, about 6:30 p.m., Utah County sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon said.

Police identified the man as 37-year-old Arturo Ray Gallemore-Jimenez.

Officers returned fire. An uninvolved motorist was struck in the shoulder during the shootout, and bullets struck a vehicle carrying a man and his 4-year-old son.

It’s unclear whether those two were targeted or whether they were caught in the crossfire, Cannon said.

Gallemore-Jimenez, who was wearing body armor, crashed into a fence near the University Parkway exit in Orem, about 9 miles down the road, police say. He was injured, though Cannon said it’s unclear whether Gallemore-Jimenezwas hurt by the crash or whether a bullet struck him.

He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital.

No officers were injured, Cannon said.
