Utah newborn is found after an Amber Alert

Police have found a newborn who had been taken by his father on Friday.

The baby is safe, confirmed Salt Lake City police Detective Richard Chipping, who declined to say where or how the infant was found.

Police believe 52-year-old Albert Phillips fled with his infant son when the Utah Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) tried to take custody of the baby Friday afternoon.

“We don’t need the public to look for Phillips or the truck at this point,” Chipping said, declining to detail whether the man had been found. A Salt Lake City police dispatcher confirmed Phillips had not been taken into custody, but the dispatcher did not know whether police are looking for him.

The DCFS will take custody of the infant.

The child’s mother was with DCFS officials when they tried to take custody of the infant about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Chipping said.

An Amber Alert had been issued for the infant at 6:09. The baby was found at 7:33 p.m., Chipping said.

“I really do want to put a thank-you out to the public for their involvement in all of this,” Chipping said. “They were very active in responding and we had a lot of dispatch calls. I don’t know if that’s what resulted in finding this kid or not, but I know there’s a lot of people trying to help.”
