Shooting by juvenile at American Fork Taco Bell leaves man in critical condition

An altercation outside the Taco Bell in American Fork led to a man being shot in the parking lot, police say.

Sgt. Josh Christensen with the American Fork Police Department said officers were dispatched to the restaurant at 633 S. 500 East just before 5:30 p.m. on a report of shots fired.

Christensen said an altercation led to a male juvenile firing multiple shots at a man, hitting him at least once. Christensen said the man who was hit had been taken to a hospital in critical condition, but was expected to survive.

Investigators determined that two male juveniles met up with a man and woman at the restaurant with the intent of robbing them, but the man and woman did not “immediately” comply and an altercation ensued.

During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the man, police said. As the suspect ran from the scene, he noticed a witness following him in a vehicle. He turned and fired multiple shots at the witness, striking the vehicle, according to police.

Police later took the alleged shooter into custody. He was taken to the hospital to treat abrasions, Christensen said. He was then booked — along with the other juvenile — at a youth detention center on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, felony discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, multiple drug charges and others.

The woman targeted in the incident suffered minor injuries, police said, and was treated at the scene.

The investigation was ongoing, police said. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident and did not speak with police is asked to call the American Fork Police Department through Utah Valley Dispatch at 801-794-3970.
