West Wendover police arrest teen in what family members call the accidental fatal shooting of his younger brother

A teenage boy is dead after a family member shot him, allegedly by accident, a news release from West Wendover, Nev., police says.

Officers were called to a home near 800 Ash Street on Sunday night just after 7 p.m. on a report that a 15-year-old boy had been shot, the news release said. Officers and medical personnel rendered aid to the teen, but he died from his injuries at the scene.

People at the victim’s home told officers that his 21-year-old brother had accidentally shot him, and the brother initially left the scene as emergency crews responded.

Family members and officers were in contact with the brother by phone, and he returned to the scene “a short while later” to turn himself over to police, the release said.

Family members are cooperating with officers, according to the release, and the brother has been booked into the Elko County jail while West Wendover police and the Elko County Sheriff’s Office continue investigating the case.

Other details about the incident were not being released as of Monday morning, police said.
