Utah man who shot acquaintance after being slashed with razor charged with murder

A 28-year-old man has been charged with first-degree felony murder after allegedly shooting a man who slashed him with a razor.

Charging documents say that Robin William Lundin, of West Point, intentionally shot and killed 30-year-old Colby Scott Barney in the early hours of Nov. 5.

At 1:36 a.m., officers responded to a call reporting that a man had been shot in the chest in the basement of a West Point home, an affidavit from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said.

Despite efforts from medics, Barney died at the scene.

The caller described Lundin as the shooter and told police he had left the scene, but as a responding officer was interviewing a witness at the home, Lundin returned and was arrested.

According to a witness, the suspect and victim had a dispute, and Barney cut Lundin’s face with a razor blade. The fight ended when Barney backed into the corner of the kitchen and was “surrendering” with his hands out and the razor blade in his pocket, the affidavit says.

Lundin allegedly retrieved a 9mm firearm from his bedroom and returned to the kitchen, where he fired twice at Barney, inflicting fatal injuries. One of the rounds injured a witness’ hand, the affidavit says.

A 1-year-old child was inside the home at the time of the shooting, the affidavit says.

Investigators believe Barney — who lived in the Salt Lake City area — had been invited to the West Point home, located near 400 North and 3300.

Lundin, who later got 28 stitches, allegedly admitted to drinking heavily during the incident.

Court records show Lundin pleaded guilty in Box Elder Justice Court in 2012 to a class C misdemeanor count of intoxication and was sentenced to two days in jail and fined $190.

In 2011, he pleaded guilty in Roy Justice Court to driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor, and drinking alcohol in a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor. Lundin was sentenced in that case to 48 hours of community service and fined $1,505.

Barney was charged in 2012 in 2nd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony, and commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a class B misdemeanor. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 1 to 15 years in prison.

Lundin is being held without bail in the Davis County jail. He is scheduled to make an initial appearance in 2nd District Court on Monday.
