Thanks to tips from the public, Salt Lake City police believe they have identified a man who was killed and buried five to seven years ago on property leased by a construction company.

Acting on a tip, the man’s body was unearthed Saturday, and the owner of the construction company was arrested.

Homicide detectives are now waiting for DNA testing to confirm the victim’s identity, police said in a Tuesday news release.

Police also said they had been in contact with the victim’s family, adding that his name will not be released until confirmed by the state medical examiner’s office.

Police had previously identified the victim as an Hispanic man in his mid-30s named Ignacio and nicknamed “Nacho,” and said he was killed sometime between 2010 and 2012.

The body was buried on property leased to Los Lobos Paving and Construction, near 800 South and 2475 West, in Salt Lake City.

The owner of the company, 56-year-old Carlos Trevizo-Acosta, was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County jail on Saturday night on suspicion of homicide and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Police believe Ignacio was killed after a disagreement with Trevizo-Acosta, who lives in the Salt Lake Valley.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.

According to a probable cause statement filed with the jail, a source told police the victim had been buried on the construction company’s property in the summer of 2011 after being killed somewhere else.

The tipster also told police about hearing gunshots and gave a detailed eyewitness account of the homicide, the probable cause statement states.

Police on Tuesday thanked “the many people who called to assist in the identification of the victim,” the news release said.

But investigators continue to ask the public for help on the case. Anyone with information about what happened is asked to contact the department at (801) 799-3753.
