Valley rain and mountain snow could make for tricky morning commute Friday in northern Utah

Valley rain and mountain snow beginning Thursday could affect the Friday morning commute in northern Utah, according to the National Weather Service.

The precipitation is expected to begin in northern Utah on Thursday and will spread south throughout the day Friday, the NWS says.

The precipitation will taper off Friday night, according to the NWS. Areas in northern Utah with altitudes higher than 4,500 feet should expect snow accumulation of up to a foot Friday morning.

The NWS warns that the fresh powder could impact travel routes through the mountains, especially during the Friday morning commute through Parley’s Canyon.

The NWS issued a winter weather advisory for north central Utah until Friday evening and a wind advisory in west central Utah until Thursday night. The rest of the state was under a hazardous weather outlook until Wednesday, warning of strong, gusty winds and snowfall.

Temperatures Thursday in the Salt Lake and Tooele valleys were expected to reach the mid-60s, but the overnight precipitation will cool temperatures to the upper-40s overnight and into Friday. Friday night lows were forecast to drop into the upper 20s, and highs are expected to be in the 40s over the weekend.

Highs in St. George are expected to reach the lower 70s Thursday, but temperatures will drop to the lower 50s overnight with a chance of rain. Friday will be breezy, the NWS says, with highs in the upper 60s. The trend will continue throughout the weekend with highs in the 60s and lows dropping into the 30s at night.
