Suspects with stolen vehicles led Utah police on two car chases in two days — one that hit speeds of 120 mph and another that yielded $20,000 in stolen equipment, authorities say.
One chase took place Monday about 2:10 a.m., when Iron County deputies spotted a stolen car heading south on Interstate 15, near mile post 88, northeast of Paragonah, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.
The deputies tried to make a traffic stop, but the car fled at speeds of 120 mph. The car exited the freeway near Parowan about 10 miles southwest of where deputies initially spotted it. The car eventually went off the road about 5 miles west of 2200 North, and the occupants — a man and a woman — fled on foot before officers arrested them.
They were booked into the Iron County jail later that morning.
In Carbon County’s city of Helper, officers chased a stolen truck days earlier. About 8:30 a.m. Saturday, an officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a truck that had reportedly been driving recklessly down Price Canyon, a news release from Helper police says.
The truck was hauling a trailer with a Jeep on top of it, and the truck fled east on U.S. Highway 6.
The truck eventually stopped at a dead-end street near 300 South and 400 West in the city, and the driver fled on foot. Officers arrested the man and discovered the truck and the trailer he’d been hauling were reported stolen. The man owned the Jeep on the trailer, police said. Inside the vehicles, there was more than $20,000 in stolen construction equipment, police said.
The driver was booked into the Carbon County jail.
