State education managers named the highest- and lowest-performing Title 1 schools in Utah this week.

The state has a total of 316 Title 1 schools this year, a designation made based on socio-economic demographics that qualify schools for supplemental federal funding.

Each year, the State Office of Education identifies Title 1 schools in three categories: priority, focus and reward.

The lowest-performing 5 percent of Title 1 schools in the state are identified as "priority" schools, with the next 10 percent of lowest-performing schools identified as "focus" schools. Both focus and priority schools are required to implement school improvement strategies.

"Reward" schools are not limited to a pre-determined percentage, but are those Title 1 schools that are the highest-performing in the state.

"Those are schools that are performing at or above the state average despite being Title 1 schools," said Mark Peterson, Utah State Office of Education spokesman.

The category designations are based on a two-year average of students' year-end test scores, Peterson said. Beginning next year, reward, focus and priority schools will be identified based on the SAGE computer adaptive test, which students took for the first time last spring.

Utah's "priority" schools are:

• Granite School District: Granger High School; Lincoln Elementary; Roosevelt Elementary.

• Ogden School District: James Madison Elementary.

• Salt Lake City School District: Lincoln Elementary; Meadow Lark Elementary.

• San Juan School District: Montezuma Creek Elementary; Monument Valley High School.

• Uintah School District: Eagle View Elementary.
