Unified Fire Authority crews quickly knocked down a two-alarm house fire in Cottonwood Heights on Friday afternoon.

The fire in a garage at 2533 E. 6485 South was initially reported at about 2 p.m.

UFA Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen said Friday that the fire started when a resident was working on a motorcycle in the garage with a space heater nearby.

"The space heater caught some of his cleaning supplies on fire," Petersen said.

The man got out of the garage and was able to evacuate everyone from the home, Petersen said. No one was injured.

The fire was put out just before 3 p.m. Friday. Petersen said the fire did reach the attic area of the house, but was mostly confined to the garage.

"It just totally destroyed that garage," he said.

Police reported that UFA firefighters had prevented the blaze from destroying the family's Christmas gifts.
