Just before 12-year-old Adelaide Clinger was accidentally shot and killed by her sibling last month in their Kaysville home, adults in the residence were "examining handguns," according to a recently unsealed search warrant.
On Nov. 23, police were called to the Kaysville home, near 1900 W. Cooper Street, on a report of a shooting. The search warrant, filed in 2nd District Court, revealed that just before the shooting, the girl's father had placed a loaded handgun in his pants pocket.
"A ten-year-old juvenile resident of the home accessed the firearm and discharged the firearm," a Kaysville police detective wrote in the search warrant, which sought evidence related to the shooting. "The round struck a 12-year-old juvenile resident of the home."
The warrant offers no other details about the shooting. Kaysville police have also revealed little information about the circumstances surrounding the girl's death.
Lt. Paul Thompson said Wednesday that their investigation is still ongoing, and that investigators are waiting for a final report from the state medical examiner before closing the case. Because the investigation was still active, Thompson would not comment on any other aspect of the shooting.
Adelaide was a straight-A student who sang in the choir at Centennial Junior High School, school officials have said.
