A 15-year-old boy, rolled over by an SUV that had just been hit by a car in Kearns, remained in critical condition on Wednesday.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the Kearns High School sophomore had been reported to be in "extremely critical" condition shortly after the 7:35 a.m. Tuesday accident.

The youth, on his way to classes, was crossing the intersection near 5400 South and 4300 West at the time.

A westbound Nissan Pathfinder, making a left turn onto southbound 4270 West, rolled when it was struck by an eastbound Nissan Altima.

On Wednesday, on condition he not be identified beyond his first name, "Dallas," the boy's family told Fox 13 News that he had been put in a medically induced coma. The family was "cautiously optimistic" he would eventually recover.

Hoyal said he had no specifics about the youth's condition or injuries other than confirming he remained critical. UPD did not release the boy's identity.

Neither the driver of the Pathfinder, a 24-year-old man, or the Altima, a 46-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries.

The cause of the accidents remained under investigation, UPD said.
