Every year, The Salt Lake Tribune holds an internal holiday charity drive, raising money and donations from the staff for local charities.

The Tribune has selected Volunteers of America — with its Stuff the Backpack drive for homeless teens and its efforts to raise funds for an overnight shelter for them — as our charity.

This year, we're asking readers to drop off backpacks, warm clothing, gift cards in $5 increments to places such as McDonald's or Wendy's, toys and games, toiletries and nonperishable food items.

Also, the VOA's Candy Cane Corner, which helps homeless or low-income families provide Christmas to their loved ones, needs teen and women's clothing. Those donations need to be new and unwrapped.

Readers who drop off a donation at The Tribune, 90 S. 400 West, on Thursday, Dec. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. will be entered in a drawing for one of three prizes: a family portrait shot by one of our photographers, a signed Pat Bagley cartoon print or the opportunity to be a sports columnist for a day.
