A man was killed early Thursday after an "ambush" shooting in South Salt Lake, according to police.

Police spokesman Gary Keller said 32-year-old Orlando J. Roybal, of South Salt Lake, was in a parked car with a woman near 600 E. Leland Ave. (3015 South), just after midnight on Thursday.

"They go to the area to meet somebody," Keller said. "They are approached by multiple suspects. [The suspects] open the driver's door, reach across the driver and open fire, multiple shots."

The female driver was uninjured, but Roybal was hit several times, according to Keller.

Police were initially called to the area at around 12:15 a.m. on a report of shots fired, but no one was there. A half hour later, they received notification that the man was taken to St. Mark's Hospital for treatment.

Keller said Roybal was later taken by medical helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center, where he died.

"This does not appear to be a random act," Keller said. "They were called to that area and pretty much ambushed."

Keller said police investigated the shooting overnight, but had not identified any suspects. They ask if anyone saw the shooting or has information to call South Salt Lake dispatchers at 801-840-4000. Tipsters' identities will remain confidential, Keller said.

The driver, who Keller said has been cooperative with police, was not immediately identified on Thursday.

Roybal had several criminal charges pending in 3rd District Court, including for theft, vehicle burglary and criminal mischief. His criminal history in Utah, according to a court records search, is mostly limited to theft conviction from several years ago and an attempted forcible sexual abuse conviction, a third-degree felony, in 2001.
