A student employee, who choked when her scarf got entangled in a conveyor belt at the University of Utah Campus Store, was upgraded Friday to fair condition.

School spokeswoman Marissa Villasenor said the 20-year-old woman, who initially had been listed in critical condition following the Wednesday incident, was recovering at University Hospital.

The woman was working in the bookstore loading area just before noon Wednesday when her scarf got caught in the conveyor belt, tightened around her neck and choked her into unconsciousness.

Co-workers were able to cut her loose and had already begun CPR when Salt Lake City Fire Department paramedics arrived. The woman eventually began breathing on her own and was taken to the hospital.

Hospital officials, citing the family's wishes for privacy, were not releasing the woman's name.
