The Mohave County (Ariz.) Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday that it is investigating the weekend discovery of human skeletal remains in the Arizona Strip area by a group of Utah Boy Scouts.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said the investigation had just begun into the unearthing of a skull and other bones found scattered in an unspecified area just over the Utah-Arizona border.

A pair of trousers and a blanket also were recovered at the scene, but it could be some time before an autopsy and forensic tests determine whether the remains belonged to a male or female, let alone identifying the deceased and cause of death.

Sheriff's deputies and Bureau of Land Management rangers confirmed the remains were found by members of the Cedar City-based Boy Scout Troop 1871 in an area about 17 miles south of Hurricane, Utah, not far from the Temple Trail Road.

The remains were collected and turned over to the Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office.
