David Axelrod, former campaign strategist to President Barack Obama, will speak Saturday at 7 p.m. at the McCarthey Family Foundation Lecture Series: In Praise of Independent Journalism. The lecture will take place at Rowland Hall, 720 S. Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City.

Axelrod now is director of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. His talk is titled "Old Values, New Media: A veteran journalist and strategist reflects on his time in politics."

Members of the McCarthey family are descendants of U.S. Sen. Thomas Kearns who purchased The Salt Lake Tribune in 1901. This is the ninth year of the lecture series, which is open and free to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
