Police in Orem were trying to find a would-be thief Tuesday who used a front-end loader to try to steal an ATM.

An alarm sounded about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday from Bank of American Fork near 800 East and University Parkway, said Orem police spokesman Craig Martinez.

Investigators arrived to discover an ATM missing from outside the bank. They found it nearby, outside University Mall, Martinez said.

The culprit apparently had stolen the front-end loader from a construction site at the mall and used it to dislodge the machine from the bank, Martinez said. However, he or she could not maneuver the machine into the bucket, so the thief "basically pushed it through the mall," Martinez said.

The thief could not access the cash in the stolen machine and abandoned it at the mall, Martinez said.

Investigators were following up on some leads and were reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses for more information, Martinez said.
