West Valley City police have identified Rick Anthony Sanchez, of South Jordan, as the man who was stabbed to death Saturday.

Sanchez, 41, was visiting an acquaintance near 3200 S. 2000 West when the two started arguing about family issues in the driveway, according to a West Valley City police news release.

The 32-year-old man who lives at the home went inside and told Sanchez to leave, but Sanchez followed him into the home and started assaulting him and his family, the news release adds.

About 5:10 p.m., the resident picked up a knife from a counter and stabbed the visitor, police Lt. Lamont Cox said Saturday night. Sanchez was taken to the hospital, but later died.

"As of last night, detectives did not have enough evidence to book the suspect for homicide," according to the Sunday release. "Evidence exists that the suspect may have been defending himself and/or other family members inside his home."

On Saturday night, Cox said the resident had bruising on his face, and that he was cooperating with officers. His name has not been released.

Detectives are still investigating, and once they're done, they will work with the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to determine whether charges are warranted, according to the release.
