Magna • Police on Saturday night shot and killed a man threatening suicide in Magna, the Salt Lake County sheriff said.

The man's name was not immediately disclosed. The shooting happened about 7:20 p.m. in a mobile home community called Sunset Vista near 3500 S. 8400 West.

About 30 minutes earlier, Sheriff Jim Winder said, Unified Police Department received a call about a suicidal man. Officers arrived but could not located him.

The officers left to answer another call. While at that call, officers were notified the man had returned to Sunset Vista.

Eventually, an officer found a 39-year-old man cutting himself with a knife outside a home. Winder said the officer gave the man numerous orders to stop.

At some point, the officer fired a gun at the man, striking him at least four times, Winder said. The man died at a hospital.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said that the man "was charging the officer."

Winder said police had received a previous call about the man. He was making suicidal threats in that episode, too, the sheriff said.

With Saturday's shooting, police in Utah have fired on 93 people since 2010, striking 76 and killing 45, according to compiled media reports and police records obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune. Those numbers exclude domestic violence shootings committed by off-duty police officers.
