A driver died and his passenger was critically hurt Saturday in a crash just north of the Utah-Arizona border.

The 32-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was driving west on State Route 7 in a white Corvette. About 4 p.m., the speeding Corvette went airborne as it crossed River Road, then collided with a guardrail, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The front of the Corvette became lodged under the guardrail and slid about 200 feet. The driver died, while his 27-year-old passenger was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition, according to UHP.

Both men had been wearing seat belts.

The route, also known as Southern Parkway, was closed at River Road while troopers cleared the scene. The Utah Department of Transportation expected the route to reopen about 11:20 p.m.
