Layton police are looking for a man they suspect pointed a gun at a couple and escaped from police in the pursuit that followed.

On Friday, a husband and wife answered their door near 2200 N. Snoqualmie Drive to see the suspect — Justin Andrew Adams — standing there with an empty gas can.

He asked if he could come in and use their phone, and though they said no, the couple let him use one of their cell phones, according to a Layton police news release.

Adams pretended to make a call, handed the phone back, then pointed a handgun at them and "asked if they wanted to get shot," the release adds. Adams then fled the scene in a silver Chevy pickup; police Lt. Jason Hinojosa added that police are not sure what his intentions were.

A Layton police officer spotted the truck at Sunset Drive and Highway 89 and followed it until other officers were available to back him up.

The police pulled Adams over near 2600 Hillfield Road, but though "he put his hands up and appeared to comply," he started the pickup again and drove off, according to the release.

Police pursued him, but had to give up the chase a short time later.

"He was getting dangerous," Hinojosa said. "In fact, there was a small, very minor accident where no on was injured, [a fender-bender because someone tried] braking to avoid this guy. The supervisor didn't want something to happen."

His pickup is described as a 1998 Chevy that's silver or light bronze with a black trim on the bottom. It has a Utah plate of X379AX.

Adams, 32, is white, 5-foot-10 and 220 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.

Layton police are asking anyone who may have information as to his whereabouts to call them at 801-497-8300.

He is considered armed and dangerous, the release adds.
