Salt Lake City police on Tuesday were looking for suspects in a stabbing outside the downtown Road Home shelter that left a man fighting for his life.

SLCPD Detective Richard Chipping said the attack took place near the intersection of 400 West and 200 South, just before 9 p.m. Monday. Witnesses told police that several men, alternately described as black and Latino, had attacked the 22-year-old victim and left him bleeding from multiple stab wounds.

What led up to the assault was under investigation. Detectives hope the victim, who remained in critical condition at a hospital on Tuesday, might be able to shed more light on the incident if and when he recovers enough for questioning.

Just 90 minutes earlier, another man walked into a liquor store a block away with a serious stab wound. Police said the victim, who was recovering at the hospital, identified his assailant as a 5-foot-9 white male with one eye.
