How did the postal service get the name right and the address close, but not close enough? Because Sue Cates and Susie Cates live in the same condominium complex.
The similarities don't end there.
"I've been volunteering at the Mount Olympus Senior Center for two years now," says Sue Cates. "Imagine my surprise when I walked in, two months ago, and saw my neighbor, Susie Cates, at the center. I knew she was too young to be a participant and then I found out she was my new supervisor."
Susie Cates laughs. "Some friends of mine told me about an opening at the facility, so I applied. I didn't know Sue worked here either. When I saw her name in the newsletter, I thought, 'I can't wait to see her here. She won't believe it!' "
Sue Cates is from Los Angeles. Cates is her married name. Susie Cates is originally from Oklahoma. Cates is her maiden name she went back to using following her divorce.
"We originally met at our condos over a noise issue," says Susie Cates. "I saw her go outside and could tell she was trying to figure out where a certain noise was coming from. I went out there to talk to her about it because I've been concerned about the same thing, and that's when we learned we had the same name."
The noise Sue and Susie were concerned about was coming from a building's air conditioner blowers across the street. The blowers remain on throughout the day and night, disturbing the residents of the condos. Susie and Sue have both been working to try and get this issue resolved.
"We would bump into each other every now and then," adds Sue Cates, "and have joked about our names being the same, but who would've thought we would have ended up working at the same place, too?"
While Susie is the supervisor, Sue teaches creative-writing classes twice a month to the participants at the center. Of all the participants who enter the doors of the center each day, no other ones are named Sue or Susie.
"I do have a cousin who married a woman named Sue Cates," says Susie. "And I went to an ophthalmologist once who had another patient there named Sue Cates, so there is another one around, I think."
"But it wasn't me," adds Sue.
Even though one Cates started off in California and the other began her life in Oklahoma and the odds of them meeting might have been slim, their meeting and now working together seems like it was meant to be.
