National Wildlife Refuge Week is being observed through Saturday at the 565 national wildlife refuges and 38 wetland management districts throughout the United States.

Three of those — Bear River, Ouray and Fish Springs — are located in Utah and provide decidedly different experiences.

Bear River, located west of Brigham City, is part of the Great Salt Lake system. Ouray is more of a desert refuge. And Fish Springs, located along the Pony Express Trail in the West Desert, is one of the most remote refuges in the lower 48 states.

Some of the refuges offer special festivals, education programs or events during the celebration.
