These young climbers — the best from across the West — truly do belong to a rising generation.

Hundreds of them, ages 8 through 19 from Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, competed Saturday in Ogden on Day Two of the American Bouldering Series Divisional Championships for a shot to advance to the national meet.

"We're incredibly excited at the opportunity to host the 2016 USA Climbing Divisional Championships," Shad Burnham, CEO of The Front Climbing Club, said in a news release.

The Front Climbing Club sports more 15,000 square feet of state-of-the-art bouldering terrain with bouldering walls rising about 18 feet high.

Bouldering, the release noted, is a form of rock climbing in which the participant climbs without the protection of a rope. Instead, thick padding on the ground is used to cushion the climber in the event of a fall.
