Managers of Arches and Canyonlands national parks want to raise entrance fees at the popular recreation spots.

Under a National Park Service proposal released Friday, the cost of driving a single vehicle into either park would go up to $25. Currently, entrance for a private vehicle costs $10.

Campground fees generally would increase by $5 a night at Arches' Devils Garden and Canyonlands' Willow Flat and Squaw Flat campgrounds.

And ranger-led Fiery Furnace tours would cost more — increasing from $10 to $16 per person for adults (13 years old and older) and from $5 to $8 for children.

Park managers noted in the release that fees have repaired three and half miles of trails and added vault toilets at Devils Garden. Parking at the Wolfe Ranch/Delicate Arch trailhead will be expanded this year using fee funding.

Fees have not increased at either park since 1996.

Along with the proposed fee increases, Arches park managers released a congestion management plan for the park. Since 1989, the number of parking spaces at Arches has increased 93 percent. The Wolfe Ranch lot will double in size this summer.

Park leaders are considering adding more parking, a parking reservation system, shuttles and parking attendants to handle the increased traffic.

The park also will host an open house Jan. 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Moab's Grand Center, 82 N. 500 West.
