1917

Feb. 18 • A .22 caliber bullet barely misses W. Bohn, 2418 Groen St,, while he is sitting in his front room. Believing himself to be the target of an assassination attempt, he phones police. Officers arrest two teenage boys who say they were engaged in target practice.

Feb. 19 • The same bulldog that terrorized Lafayette school children (biting two of them) two weeks ago, reappears this afternoon and bites five more. The dog is shot and killed by Officer Jack Egbert.

• When two patrol officers are called to arrest Frank Bellary, 23, for disturbing the peace at a 400 West bar, he produces a semi-automatic pistol and fires at Patrolman Arthur Merrick. The bullet passes through the officer's coat without striking him. It is the 14th time in two years that Merrick has been shot at by offenders.

Feb. 20 • While attempting to take a shortcut to his home at 622 Twenty-third St. in Ogden, a banker slips on a log, falls into the Ogden River and drowns.

Feb. 22 • Winfield Raddon, 15, of East Union in the Murray area, and his horse outrace a rabid coyote. The pursuit lasts until the coyote runs into a fence.

• During an argument over an order of eggs in the Newhouse Hotel restaurant, the chef seizes waitress Lillian Templar and puts her over his knee, spanking her with the flat side of a meat cleaver. The chef refuses to give his name when arrested.

1942

Feb. 18 • Utah receives no gas masks but organizes groups to protect citizens should Japan or Germany attack the state with chemical agents.

Feb. 19 • The Salt Lake City Commission announces a $10 per month raise for firefighters and police officers effective May 1.

Feb. 23 • The parents of U.S. Air Corps Major Floyd J. Pell receive word that he was killed two days before while fighting somewhere in the Pacific.

Feb. 24 • Buried for two days in a mine collapse in Mercur, three men are finally rescued.

1967

Feb. 18 • Three days after crashing his light plane into a mountain in northern Cache County during a storm, pilot Foster D. Deines, 35, of Evergreen, Colo., appears at a doorway in Paradise and asks for help.

Feb. 19 • A cat living at 11 Sonata St. (1260 West) in Salt Lake City goes berserk and bites six people during a Sunday morning rampage. Animal Control officers respond and seize the cat.

Feb. 24 • A holdup at the South Temple branch of Continental Bank & Trust Co., nets an estimated $5,500 for a "very cool" young male bandit with long blond hair.

Also this week • "Monkeys Go Home," starring Dean Jones and Yvette Mimieux, debuts. And mild cheddar cheese sells for 49 cents a pound.

1992

Feb. 19 • West Valley detectives fly to New Hampshire to return a 56-year-old man wanted for manufacturing child porn. In May of 1990, the man was hailed a citizen "hero" for chasing down and capturing a man accused of robbing two tourists. Months later, learning he is being investigated for child sexual abuse, he flees Utah.

• Citing its negative effect on tourism and business, Utah senators vote 21-7 against a bill that would prevent people from smoking in restaurants.

Feb. 21 • A Kennedy Junior High School worker, Margo Bond, 42, disappears while changing locker combinations at the school. Her body is found in a shallow grave six months later in Tooele County. Her killer, Roberto Arguelles, dies in prison in 2003.

Feb. 22 • Linda Bourne, 34, a part-time police officer in Garland, makes history when she becomes the first female police chief in Utah.

Also this week • "Wayne's World," starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, and "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot," starring Sylvester Stallone and Estelle Getty, open in theaters.
