Salt Lake still has the country's lowest unemployment rate among the 51 metro areas nationally with populations of 1 million or more. It's unemployment rate in January was 3.0 percent — far below the 5.1 percent national rate, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.

The agency estimated Salt Lake City, which has had the lowest jobless rate among large metro areas for months, had 644,244 people in its civilian workforce in January — and 19,299 unemployed.

While Salt Lake City was the best among large metro areas, Provo-Orem and Logan had unemployment rates at 2.9 percent. The Ogden-Clearfield area was at 3.3 percent, same as the overall state rate, and St. George was at 3.5 percent.

Denver was close behind Salt Lake City with an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent. The bureau said the Cleveland had the highest jobless rate — 6.6 percent.
