A 35-year-old man died early Monday after apparently striking a tree while snowboarding at Brighton Ski Resort on Sunday.

Authorities said it appeared that Markus Fritz struck a tree while snowboarding with a friend, who didn't witness the incident. The friend saw Fritz's helmet on the ground and soon after found Fritz lying in the snow.

Fritz was flown to Intermountain Medical Center with what Unified Police spokesman Lt. Brian Lorhke described as "serious head injuries." Fritz died shortly after midnight, hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said.

A GoFundMe page that was set up Monday to help cover funeral costs said Fritz had two sons.
