Idaho Falls' newly renovated Mormon temple will reopen in June, nearly 27 months after it closed for an interior makeover.

The Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that the temple, located near the city's namesake water feature along the scenic Snake River, will welcome visitors from April 22 through May 20 for a public open house.

On June 4, the edifice will be rededicated, after which only faithful Mormons will be able to enter.

Originally dedicated in 1945, the Idaho Falls temple was the Gem State's first LDS temple. Now there are four, with a fifth under construction in Meridian, west Boise.

The Idaho Falls structure closed in March 2015 for an interior makeover. It was expected to open in early 2017, The Associated Press previously reported, but crews ran into some unexpected construction delays.

Mormons view temples as houses of God, places where they take part in their faith's highest rites, including eternal marriage.
