Carol Hansen, wife of LDS Church Salt Lake City Mission President Stephen Hansen, has died at age 69.

Carol Hansen collapsed suddenly at the church's mission home in Salt Lake City on Wednesday. She died soon after.

The Hansens' eldest son, Ken Hansen, said a specific cause of death had not yet been determined.

However, he said his mother's death had come by surprise since she had appeared to be in good health.

In a statement released Friday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed its condolences, noting the Hansens had served in the Salt Lake City Mission since July 2013.

"They are deeply loved by their family, church leaders, and their missionaries," the statement said. "We pray for each of them at this difficult time and extend our love to President Hansen and his family."

Carol Hansen is survived by her husband, with whom she reared eight children in Minneapolis. The couple, who had 23 grandchildren, had retired to St. George before answering the mission call to Salt Lake City.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
