Utah Catholics on Thursday will recognize a former Beehive State governor and a Mormon general authority — along with their wives — as "humanitarians among us."

Jon Huntsman and his wife, Mary Kaye Huntsman, as well as longtime LDS apostle L. Tom Perry and his wife, Barbara Perry, will be among those honored at Catholic Community Services' annual Humanitarian Awards Dinner at Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.

Mary Kaye Huntsman has launched two youth programs — called Bag of Hope and Power in You — the group said. "Together, Jon and Mary Kaye have worked tirelessly in public service and to help those in need."

The Perrys are known "for their humanitarian spirit and love," a CCS news release said, "for helping those in need."

Philanthropist Sam Skaggs' ALSAM Foundation will be named as CCS "partner of the year," and Jan Luger, a volunteer with the Catholic service organization has been deemed this year's "Unsung Hero."

"These humanitarians exemplify the mission of CCS," the release said, "to practice gospel values of love, compassion and hope through service, support and collaboration."

The organization, which serves those in need along the Wasatch Front regardless of religion, runs refugee-resettlement programs to relocate people fleeing from persecution and provides treatment services to help those battling addictions. It also operates the St. Vincent DePaul Center, which serves meals to the hungry, the Wiegand Day Center for the homeless and the Hall Food Bank in northern Utah.
