Hundreds of students were treated Wednesday to Hale Centre Theatre's production of Harper Lee's American masterpiece, "To Kill a Mockingbird," at the West Valley City stage.

More than 5,000 students, ranging from seventh to 12th grades, will watch the play on various dates through HCT's Student Matinee Program.

"It's one of those shows that will stay with you," Sally Dietlein, HCT vice president and executive producer, said in a statement. "The relationship between Scout and Jem onstage as sister and brother shines through with our young cast, some of whom are actually sister and brother. They draw the characters out of the novel into a pure and magical performance."

More than 90 schools participate in the program, some traveling from as far away as Idaho and Wyoming. The matinees in the program are offered free of charge to the students through donations from Mountain America Credit Union and Rocky Mountain Power.

The Hale is presenting more than 45 consecutive performances of "To Kill a Mockingbird" through May 20.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and matinees Saturdays at 12:30 and 4 p.m. Additional matinees are available throughout the week at 4 p.m. Tickets are $34 for adults and $18 for youth (K-12.)
