Dan L. Peterson is back in Utah thanks to DNA evidence that linked him to the 1986 slaying of a Salt Lake City teen.

Peterson, 44, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail Thursday after traveling almost 700 miles from the Maricopa County jail in Arizona. The Phoenix man decided last week not to fight extradition to Utah.

Prosecutors say Peterson could be arraigned as early as Monday in 3rd District Court on one count of first-degree felony murder for the stabbing death of Tiffany Hambleton. He remains in jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

The development comes more than 20 years after Hambleton's body was found in a ditch with stab wounds to her neck and chest. Police suspected Peterson in the attack, but couldn't prove it.

With recent breakthroughs in DNA technology, police now have linked Peterson's to the 14-year-old's death. They say semen stains on Hambleton's shirt and material taken from her fingernails point to his involvement.
