A 55-year-old Salt Lake City man died Sunday when a car hit his motorcycle at the intersection of State Street and 500 South in Salt Lake City, police said.

The motorcyclist was westbound on 500 South about 11 a.m., said Salt Lake City police Lt. Scott White. He was in one of the inner lanes of the one-way street and stopped at a red light at State Street and had started to move again when a Chevrolet four-door car heading north on State Street hit his motorcycle. He was thrown from the bike and killed on impact, apparently from a spinal cord injury, White said. He was wearing a helmet. His name was not released, pending family notification.

The driver, a woman who appeared to be in her mid-20s, was not injured, nor was a male passenger in the car.

Police are investigating who had the right of way and the speed of the car, White said.
