A Salt Lake City man is accused of breaking into a stranger's home, then chasing her and assaulting her with a broomstick and a martial arts weapon as she tried to flee from him.

A woman awoke to sounds of breaking glass at her home near 900 East and 2700 South in the early hours of Oct. 24, according to charging documents filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

She observed a 22-year-old stranger standing outside her windows. The man then lunged at her through the broken window but was unable to grab her, according to charges.

The woman ran out of her house to a neighboring home. Three neighbors reported to police that they saw the woman running toward them with the suspect trailing her, charges state.

He struck her with what police later determined was a portion of a broomstick and nunchucks, according to charges. He left the scene, but was later arrested by Salt Lake City police.

The man is charged with first-degree felony aggravated burglary, two counts of third-degree felony aggravated assault and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

His initial court appearance is set for Nov.17.
