Four airmen from Hill Air Force Base involved in a street racing duel caused a rollover accident in Bountiful Saturday, leaving one 18-year-old man with critical head injuries.
Two cars were racing northbound on Interstate 15 near 500 West when a white Mazda lost control and side-swiped a Dodge pickup on the freeway about 4:50 p.m., said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Smith.
The collision caused the Mazda to roll. The vehicle slid and landed upside down several hundred yards down the highway.
Maurice Brown, 18, who was driving the Mazda, suffered severe head injuries in the rollover and was flown by helicopter to University Hospital. He remained in critical condition Saturday evening. His 20-year-old passenger, Matthew Godfrey, was taken by ambulance to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful.
Authorities detained the silver Subaru Impreza that was involved in racing with Brown's Mazda. The driver and passenger in that car were 18-year-old Richard Gains and Brandon Louis, 19.
Smith said he was told the airmen were due to deploy to Afghanistan soon. Charges are pending in the case.
The driver of the Dodge pickup was not injured.
