Police on Friday morning caught a man they believed robbed one downtown Salt Lake City bank, then tried to rob a second bank in the area less than 15 minutes later.

A man walked into Brighton Bank at 311 S. State St. at 10:41 a.m., demanded cash and left with an undisclosed amount of money, said Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Lara Jones.

A few minutes later, police got a call from a Wells Fargo branch at 299 S. Main St., reporting that a man had tried to rob them. He did not get any money.

Witnesses in both incidents described the man as 35 to 40 years old, standing about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a big nose, a droopy eye, a white shirt, tan shorts or pants, and carrying or wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt.

An officer on his bicycle later spotted a man who fit the description at Acme Burger, 275 S. 200 West.

Police said around 4 p.m. that the 55-year-old suspect had been arrested.
