Police arrested two suspected gang members accused of burglarizing several cars after a short chase early Wednesday morning.

It started about 3 a.m., when a Salt Lake County metro gang unit detective saw a red Toyota Celica hit a green Toyota truck in the parking lot of a Studio 6 Suites hotel at 975 E. 6600 South, said sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.

When the detective drove up, thinking he had seen a car accident, someone jumped from the truck to the Celica and the car sped off onto Interstate 215 at Union Park Avenue. Police chased the car to 3000 East, where the driver crashed in the median.

Officers arrested the passenger right away. The driver ran and hid in the bushes but was quickly arrested. In the car, police found car stereos, sound equipment, and other items stolen in at least five to seven vehicle burglaries in Midvale and Sandy, Hutson said. Most of the high-value items have been returned to the owners, he said.

The two men, ages 29 and 20, were arrested on multiple charges, including fleeing, failure to stop and vehicle burglary. Both are "know affiliates" of white supremacist gangs, Hutson said.
