A bicyclist was struck by a car in Salt Lake City at about noon Thursday, but his helmet protected him from severe injury.
A 44-year-old man was heading west on 1100 East and Harrison Avenue when a car driven by a 70-year-old man turned in front of him to get into a parking lot, said Sgt. Robin Snyder of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
The bicyclist hit the car's front bumper and was thrown over the hood of the car. When he came down to the ground, the impact caused his helmet to break in half.
He was transported to the hospital with no life-threatening injuries, she said.
"Wearing a helmet contributed to him not being in more serious condition," she said.
The driver was cited for failure to yield.
