A West Jordan mother and her children are expected to make a full recovery after they were struck by an errant driver Thursday morning as they attempted to cross a street.
Police say Connie Robinson had just entered the crosswalk at the intersection of Grizzly Way (5420 West) and Bridle Creek Drive (7400 South) with her 4-year-old boy, an 18-month-old toddler and her cousin's 2-year-old at 8:35 a.m. Suddenly, a southbound Nissan Altima -- driven by a 24-year-old man who had two children in the back seat -- hit them.
Police say the 4-year-old boy was thrown several feet.
The Robinson family has denied requests for interviews, but a Primary Children's Medical Center spokeswoman said the father reported that the children are going to be OK.
Heidi Jacobson has lived across the street from the Robinsons for nearly a decade and considers the mother, Connie, a good friend. Jacobson said on Friday that the family "is going to be OK."
The 4-year-old boy, who suffered the most serious injuries, will have to stay at Primary Children's for a couple of days, Jacobson said. It is also unclear how long the 18-month-old baby would remain there.
"They've got a long road of recovery from bruises, bumps and road rash," Jacobson said.
Connie Robinson suffered minor injuries and made sure her kids were stable before she had her husband take her to the hospital for care, according to Jacobson.
"A mother's heart should never have to go through that. ... I'm sure she watched that car hit her babies, and you should never have to witness that," Jacobson said. "We're just lucky we're not planning a funeral."
West Jordan police have said the driver who hit the Robinsons, Cody Ray McCormick, was driving under the influence of either alcohol or prescription drugs. West Jordan police spokesman Dan Robertson said officers found prescription medication inside McCormick's Altima.
He was arrested on suspicion of a third-degree felony DUI and two class C misdemeanors for driving on a suspended or revoked license and improper lane travel.
McCormick pleaded guilty in 2003 to misdemeanor counts of intoxication and unlawful purchase, possession or consumption of alcohol by a minor, according to court records. In a separate pending case, McCormick is charged with operating a vehicle without insurance and without a license, and failure to appear.
