A 10-year-old boy died Wednesday morning and seven others were hurt when their van rolled on southbound Interstate 15 in Millard County.
The Chevrolet van was near Scipio when it went off the left shoulder sometime between 9:30 and 10 a.m., said Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Cameron Roden. The driver pulled the van back to the right, but then went off the left shoulder again. The driver straightened out and steered back to the road, but the vehicle rolled.
Eight people were inside the van. John Vibas, of Red Deer, Alberta, was fatally injured and partially ejected. He died at the scene. Two others were thrown from the van, and flown to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi in critical condition.
One other person was taken to a hospital in serious condition, and four others were taken in fair condition. Police said most of the occupants were buckled, including the boy who died.
Further information about the victims was not immediately released. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but fatigue may have been a factor, police said.
