Salt Lake City police officers didn't have to search long for a man who tried to escape by jumping in the Jordan River -- they just crossed a bridge and caught him on the other side.

Police were responding to reports of a fight near 1200 W. North Temple on the Jordan River Parkway about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, said Salt Lake City police spokesman Robin Snyder. They found a 35-year-old man who gave officers several forms of fake I.D. When an officer found his real I.D., the man bolted and dove into the Jordan River.

He swam under a bridge and climbed out on the other side, where police officers arrested him on suspicion of identity fraud and fleeing a police officer. He is also a deported felon wanted for aggravated re-entry into the country.
