A 20-year-old homeless man was charged with second-degree felony aggravated assault in 3rd District Court on Wednesday for allegedly beating another man with a wooden club at a Salt Lake City motel.

A witness told police that on Monday he was in a hotel room at the Temple View Motel, 325 N. 300 West, when the homeless man began beating a third man in the room with a wooden club, according to charging documents.

Police arrived at the scene and found the accused assailant with blood on his hands and carrying a wooden club, court documents state. The man later told police he attacked the other man with the club, but did not offer a motive.

The victim required emergency surgery for bleeding of the brain because of the attack, according to court documents.

The alleged attacker was booked into the Salt Lake County jail with bail set at $25,000.
