A cyclist died Monday after he was struck by a pickup that apparently ran a red light at State Street and 3900 South.

Gregory A. Hayes, 48, was riding a bicycle westward across State Street in the south crosswalk about 1:30 p.m. when a northbound Ford F-250 struck him, tossing him over the top of the truck, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson. The Ford then continued into the intersection and collided with an eastbound Mitsubishi Diamante.

"Witnesses were adamant that it was a clear red light" for the pickup, Hutson said. Detectives are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

Hayes died about 5:30 p.m.; the man driving the Ford, 51, was taken to a hospital for observation. The Mitsubishi driver was not injured.
